Graded MINT 9 by PSA. Among 815 total copies recorded in PSA’s census reporting, just six specimens of the Johnson/Portrait design have achieved MINT 9 status with none graded higher. (Competing grading service SGC has holdered none at all above the NM+ level.) Walter Johnson enjoys an exalted role as a symbol of pitching excellence. His stature transcends generations of younger players coming and going in the game, and is certain to endure for posterity. Many of his records – though set long ago – still stand, among them the most career shutouts (110) and the most consecutive seasons (8) leading his league in strikeouts. Whenever a modern hurler is recognized for equaling a particular mark, and currently sharing that accomplishment with two or three others from the past, one of those “other” names is usually Johnson’s. Walter Johnson’s singular status is incontestable, and suitably elite trading card commemoratives of this amazing athlete remain excruciatingly difficult to obtain.

The offered T206 card, though, presents as one of those very rare, wholly fitting tribute pieces. Most conspicuously definitive about this tobacco insert is the term Mint – and all that the word stands for – that has been justifiably ascribed to it. The card puts forth the ultimate in factory-fresh character, with precisely machined edges, impeccable centering and a flawlessly sublime image. The item’s reverse side is resolutely inked in its series’ “Piedmont – 150 Subjects” design. In every respect, a great player is honored here by a great collectible. Walter Johnson reached the pinnacle of his craft. So, too, did the American Tobacco Company, in the production of this truly Mint condition Johnson depiction.
