Offered is one of the true premier sports collectibles available at any auction, an Olympic medal from the 1912 Stockholm Olympics the 5th Olympiad in the modern era. It does not get much better than an Olympic medal, a small piece of hardware when compared to the blood, sweat and tears which went into the making of the winner. This Olympiad is historic because of the participation of American Jim Thorpe, who won two gold medals, and when awarding Thorpe his prize, King Gustav said, "You, sir, are the greatest athlete in the world.”  

      The obverse of this medal exhibits an athlete receiving a laurel crown from two female figures while the reverse is a relief of a herald opening the Games with a bust statue of Pehr Henrik Ling, an early pioneer of Swedish athletics featured behind him with “LING” engraved on the pedestal. The raised words “Olympiska / Spelen / Stockholm 1912” appear around the edge. With the obverse designed by Bertram Mackennal with the design first used in the London Games in 1908. Noted local artist Erik Lindberg designed the reverse. This example is 33 centimeters in diameter, and weighs just under 18 grams. 

      With only 285 Silver Medals apparently struck for these games, there are likely very few of these precious commodities left. Of the few we have found which have traded hands in recent years, this example remains one of the highest conditioned examples, technically grading in Very Fine condition with minimal tarnishing with all lettering still raised and fully legible.  

      With many Olympic medals hitting the market in recent years, and realizing Olympian prices, the popularity of Olympic memorabilia is at a near all time high. This is an opportunity to obtain one of the oldest examples of Summer Olympic medals, one in tremendous condition from the most historic of the early Olympiads.
