Encapsulated and assessed "Authentic" by SGC. Although showing levels of wear and tear consistent with a day of pocket storage nearly a century ago, this paper relic projects a powerful sense of history. The very small, very rare keepsake witnessed the conclusion of an early and exciting World Championship contest. With its more ample seating capacity, Braves Field was borrowed to accommodate the onrush of fans attending the 1916 World Series. But it was not the Boston Nationals who hosted this Series, it was instead the reigning World Champion Red Sox. The 1916 World Series was a short affair. Despite the able guidance of Wilbert Robinson, fine pitching, and the impressive support of Casey Stengel and Zack Wheat, the Brooklyn Robins simply didn't have the firepower to withstand the Red Sox onslaught. As the teams returned to Boston for Game 5, Brooklyn was on the ropes, down 3 games to 1. The Red Sox could afford to lose the next two contests and still remain in the hunt, but the cushion wasn't necessary. Boston took the lead in the bottom of the third inning and never looked back, cruising to a 4-1 victory and another World Series crown. Making this their 4th World Series title! The hero of this Series-concluding tilt was Ernie Shore, who crafted an excellent, complete-game three-hitter. (The youngster, Babe Ruth, was of course rostered with the Red Sox in 1916, and he was certainly instrumental in the team's successes that season, but he didn't figure in this decisive Game 5.) Goldin Auctions will be donating 5% of the winning bid price of this lot and all lots in this auction to the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum.
