Babe Ruth Auction to Benefit Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/6/2016
Encapsulated and assessed "Authentic" by PSA. This is one of just nine examples, in total, recorded in PSA's census reporting. This rare stub witnessed another Giants/Yankees match-up at the Polo Grounds, their shared venue. The Giants nearly swept the New York Yankees in the now best-of-seven 1922 World Series, and – had it not been for a tie in Game 2 – they would have accomplished the feat. In Game 3, the Giants' Jack Scott hurled a shutout to blank the Yankees, 3-0. Scott, a righthanded knuckleballer and midseason acquisition, held the Babe Ruth-led Yankees to four hits (while walking only one batter) in what would turn out to be the Series' best pitching performance. The 1922 Series was also memorable for the Giants' determination to pitch around the dangerous bat of Ruth, who uncharacteristically failed to homer in this Fall Classic. Goldin Auctions will be donating 5% of the winning bid price of this lot and all lots in this auction to the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum.
