Babe Ruth Auction to Benefit Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/6/2016
As an encore to a thoroughly dominant 1927 season, the 1928 New York Yankees held off a late-charging Athletics squad and proceeded to best the St. Louis Cardinals in the Fall Classic – thus sweeping an N.L. counterpart for the second straight October. Offered here is an OAL (Barnard) ball signed by twenty-one of those 1928 Bronx heroes. The creamy toned example boasts prominent blue stampings and vibrant, alternating blue and red laces. Although covered with a thin coat of protective shellac that has endured small spots of chipping, the ball's black ink signatures project very favorably. In its expected place on the sweet spot, the unmistakable penning of Babe Ruth resonates vividly. Complementing the squad's home run leader, his Bronx Bombers teammates have decorated adjacent panels. Signatures included are: Waite Hoyt, Johnny Grabowski, Myles Thomas, Pat Collins, Tony Lazzeri, Cedric Durst, Leo Durocher, Mark Koenig, Henry Johnson, Benny Bengough, Gene Robertson, Bob Meusel, Joe Dugan, Earle Combs, Herb Pennock, Lou Gehrig, Tom Zachary, Fred Heimach and two others. The presence of Zachary's signature likely dates this ball to late in the season – or even to the postseason – as he was claimed off waivers on August 23rd. LOA from PSA/DNA. Goldin Auctions will be donating 5% of the winning bid price of this lot and all lots in this auction to the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum.
