Goudey followed up three mediocre years of baseball cards with a fantastic and exciting offering in 1938, the "Heads-Up" baseball card set. The attractive and distinctive design of the "Heads Up" bubble gum card series has always made these a favorite with collectors. #274 Joe DiMaggio is the key card to the "Heads Up" series. Most collectors know that the 1938 Goudeys included 24 subjects, each of which were issued in two different background styles, with and without cartoons. The higher numbered cartoon background cards are rarer, and more popular with collectors. Presented is the very popular "background cartoon" variety of this classic Joe DiMaggio issue. The intervening years since its issue haven't inhibited an ever-appreciative hobby audience's response to DiMaggio's enthusiastic smile, his colorful vintage portrayal, or the period humor ("$25,000 a year...pretty fair salary for a young fellow!") displayed in the little comics that surround his likeness. Goudey's fortunes were approaching the wane, but DiMaggio's were only beginning to be explored, as this delightful piece was released to consumers. This example has undergone the slightest evidence of physical aging since it was pulled from a pack. The coloration, corners and overall aesthetics reflect a captivating visual presentation and it ranks as one of finest examples in our hobby.
