Graded VG-EX 4 by PSA. Hall of Famer, in his debut-year appearance on Topps gum cards. A scarcer "High Number" entry, this condition-sensitive Ed Mathews collectible is the "Last Card" in the 1952 Topps release. This extremely desirable card – typically relegated to the bottom of the stack and accruing rubber-band damage as a result – poses a challenge to the condition-conscious collector of '52 Topps cards. Factoring in the item's identity as the rookie card of a superstar slugger, the quest to obtain a quality specimen can be a long and frustrating one. The nicely centered and brightly illustrated card presented here, though, presents the seldom-encountered opportunity to acquire a Mathews example that meets and exceeds all realistic expectations. Its colors remain vivid, its corners concede relatively mild evidence of handling, and its overall display properties are superior throughout. A pleasing and thoroughly suitable option to conclude an enviable 1952 Topps set, in Very Good to Excellent condition.
