The New York Yankees and the entire baseball world lost an icon when Lawrence Peter “Yogi” Berra passed away this past September at 90 years old. His numerous accolades and memorable quotes or “yogi-isms” will forever cement him as one of the most beloved players and persons of all time. His accomplishments include serving his country with the US Navy in World War II on D-Day as a gunner’s mate on the USS Bayfield where he received several accommodations for bravery, an 18-time all-star, 13-time World Series champion, a three-time American League MVP and induction into the Hall of Fame in 1972.
Berra wore this Wilson size 44 knit jersey during the 1982 season while serving as one of the coaches for the New York Yankees. The button-down home pinstripe jersey has the traditional interlocking “NY” and Berra’s number “8” sewn on in navy blue tackle twill. A team tag is sewn on in a cotton/nylon fabric swatch on the inside back collar with “Berra 82 1”.
The jersey shows light use which would be consistent with a coach’s jersey and has minor stains in the rear of the collar area on the cotton fabric lining. Berra signed his name in blue marker vertically on the lower front left of the jersey and also signed his name in silver marker on the center of the “8” on the back of the jersey
This item comes with a full LOA from Mears, who have graded this jersey an A-9, plus additional LOAs from Steiner Sports and JSA. With Yogi's recent passing, the chance to get a home Yankees pinstriped jersey with the now retired #8 on the back game worn by Berra may not be coming along any time soon.
