Although he finished second in National League MVP voting, Andre Dawson’s remarkable 1983 season was good enough for him to be presented with the “1983 National League Player of the Year Award” at the Thirteenth Annual Kansas City Baseball Awards Dinner on January 28, 1984.” Dawson finished second to Dale Murphy for the NL MVP award while the two players posted remarkably similar numbers both playing center field for the respective Montreal Expos and Atlanta Braves teams. Dawson hit 32 home runs with 113 RBI and a .299 batting average, was named to his third straight All-Star team and won his fourth straight Gold Glove for a third place Montreal Expos team that finished 82-80, eight games out of first place in the NL East.
This classic looking 19” tall trophy contains a silver colored batter following through on his swing standing atop a metal cup etched with a Kansas City Royals logo mounted on top of a wooden base with Schmidt’s name engraved into a mirrored name plate on top of a larger 10” x 10” wooden base with four silver eagles at each corner and another engraved nameplate reading: “1983 National League Player-of-the-Year Tenth Annual Kansas City Baseball Awards Dinner January 28, 1983. Trophy is the original presented to Dawson, is in excellent condition and comes with a notarized letter of authenticity from Andre Dawson.
