The New York Yankees did their best to honor the horrific 9/11 attacks by sporting several commemorative items on their jersey in September through their run to the World Series later that season.
This game-used, button down Derek Jeter Yankees home jersey is a brilliant example of that. “The Captain’s” jersey features the stitched “American flag” patch on the back collar and black armband on the left sleeve, both tributes to the lives lost on 9/11. The left sleeve of the jersey also features a 2001 World Series patch, while the right sleeve boasts the “100 SEASONS” American League patch. The “NY” logo appears on the left chest of the jersey, while Jeter’s number “2” rests on the back, both in navy blue tackle twill. The front tail of the jersey features a “Russell Athletic Authentic Collection” manufacturer’s tag with three additional affixed tags that read “100% POLYESTER 48,” “2” EXTRA LENGTH,” and “2001,” indicating the jersey’s size, modifications and year. This jersey was worn by Jeter during the stretch run of the 2001 season, and prepared by the team to be worn by the captain in the 2001 World Series. The jersey shows game use evident and comes with an LOA from Steiner Collectibles.
