A harbinger of his Hall of Fame career to follow, a 22-year-old Andre Dawson knocked 19 home runs with 65 RBI, 21 stolen bases and 1 .282 batting average to win the National League’s Rookie of the Year Award in 1997. Dawson edged New York Mets outfielder Steve Henderson with 10 first place votes to Henderson’s nine and 42% to 38% share of the vote. This 17” x 13.5” framed display contains the actual award presented to Dawson on an 8” x 11” bronze plaque featuring the Sporting News distinctive cursive letterhead with an etching of an American eagle holding a ribbon in its beak across the top. The text on the plaque reads: “The Sporting News congratulates Andre Dawson Outfielder-Montreal Expos on his selection as 1977 National League Rookie Player of the Year as chosen in a survey of the league’s players by The Sporting News” above fine print reading: This certificate attests to the outstanding ability of the recipient in the game of professional baseball. His ability was so pronounced that little difficulty was encountered in making the selection.
