Andre Dawson’s incredible 1987 season with the Chicago Cubs unfolded in dream like fashion. Supremely confident in his abilities Dawson signed an unprecedented blank check for the season telling the Cubs they could pay him whatever they felt he was worth. With singular focus and dogged determination he dismantled National League pitching to the tune of a league-leading 49 home runs and 137 RBI reaping a bevy of post season awards and honors including this magnificent Hank Aaron NL RBI Champion Award. This extremely rare, clear acrylic trophy is one of only two we have seen offered for auction and stands 13.75” tall with a home-plate-shaped plaque containing an engraved etching of Hank Aaron following through on his classic swing and the words “RBI Champion” and “National League” above and below his image. Trophy is set in a 7.5” x 7.5” marbled white base containing the names of the top 10 all-time RBI leaders at the time it was presented to Dawson including; Hank Aaron 2,297, Babe Ruth 2,204, Lou Gehrig 1,190, Ty Cobb 1,959, Stan Musial 1,951, Jimmie Foxx 1,921, Willie Mays 1,903, Mel Ott 1,860, Carl Yastrzemski 1,844 and Ted Williams 1,839. The front of the base may formerly have contained a name plate stating that is was The 1987 Hank Aaron Award Presented by Major League Baseball to Andre Dawson of the Chicago Cubs and his 137 RBI total. Other than the missing name plate the trophy is in very good condition with only one noticeable scuff on its acrylic surface close to the plaque on top and comes with a notarized letter of authenticity from Andre Dawson.
