Among the most rarefied feats in baseball, as far as frequency goes, hitting for the cycle (hitting a single, double, triple and home run in the same game) is just about the batter’s equivalent to a pitcher throwing a no-hitter. While roughly 300 hitters have hit for the cycle slightly less than 290 pitchers have thrown a no-hitter. Andre Dawson hit this Rawlings A. Bartlett Giamatti Official National League for a single in the bottom of the eighth inning off San Francisco Giants hurler Jim Gott when he hit for the cycle on April 27, 1987 in the Cubs 8-4 at Wrigley Field early in his magical MVP season. Dawson connected for a solo home run off Giants starting pitcher Roger Mason in the bottom of the first inning and doubled off Mason in the bottom of the third. He singled off Greg Minton in the bottom of the fourth and hit a triple off Mike LaCoss to complete the cycle in the bottom of the sixth before adding another single for good measure in the bottom of the eighth. All of Dawson’s hits in the game are inscribed by Dawson in green ball point pen on a side panel of this ball under a heading reading: “Hit for the cycle 4-29-87 against the S.F. Giants 5 hits i5 at bats.” Caramel colored ball shows game use remnants of mud rubdown and a couple of scuffs and comes with a notarized letter of authenticity from Dawson.
