After setting the record for most home runs in a season in 1927, The Babe continued his bat wielding dominance by hitting the ball at a .323 clip and clouting another 54 home runs. But while 1927 was all Babe Ruth, 1928 was Lou Gehrig's breakout season. The 25 year-old hit .374 and led the league in RBI and slugging percentage. In that year's World Series the Yankees clobbered St. Louis in four straight, Ruth hitting .625 with three homers and Gehrig going .545 with four homers.

      Arguably, no pair of teammates in the history of the game were as dominating in post-season play as Ruth and Gehrig were in 1928 and this unique ball captures both those men during their greatest collective season. The Spalding Official National League Heydler ball dates to 1928 and has been signed by Ruth on the sweet spot and Gehrig has signed on the panel just to the left of Ruth. This ideal configuration allows both signatures to be displayed at the same time. Overall the Spalding ball has some toning and scuffs, but the black fountain pen ink has remained very strong and bold throughout the decades, the two signatures just popping off the ball's surface.
