In 1985 the Villanova Wildcats shocked the sports world when they upset the No. 1 ranked Georgetown Hoyas, 66-64, to become National Champions. One of the key players on that title team was Gary McLain (#22), who was the starting point guard that season. Gary was also the MVP of the championship game against Georgetown. This is a replacement ring presented to McLain. It features a 10 point diamond set inside a "V" and atop a blue stone, with four smaller 10 pt diamond stones top and bottom. The words "NATIONAL CHAMPIONS" appears on the perimeter in raised relief. One shank has the name "GARY MCLAIN" with a large V which is engraved with "VILLANOVA". The words "FAMILY" and "THE BIG EAST" also appear. The other shank has the school name "VILLANOVA" across the top with an image of a church with the words "UNITY", "TRUTH" and "LOVE" engraved. Below is the term "BIG 5 CHAMPIONS" indicating this squad also won the Philadelphia city title. With the band of this 14K solid gold, size 10/36 gram ring is the manufacturer symbol "KJ 14K". This ring was presented to McLain as a replacement for his original, and several instances of modifications are evident which were requested by McLain as he was the Most Valuable Player of the Championship game and wanted a ring worthy of that achievement. This ring is 14K gold, while the originals were only 10K. However, player rings are always the most desirable type, and this recent beauty is derived from one of the biggest upset wins in NCAA basketball tournament history. Mint condition. LOA from Gary McLain.
