Former MLB and NPB first baseman Orestes Destrade used this cap and glove during the 1987 MLB season, his first year in the Majors. Destrade played for the New York Yankees in 1987, appearing in nine games at the end of the year as a September call-up. Destrade collected five hits in his limited action, supplementing that number with five walks and five runs scored. He was perfect in the field, recording 20 putouts and one assist in 21 total fielding chances.
The hat in this lot is navy blue, with the Yankees interlocking “NY” logo embroidered on the front in white. Destrade signed the underside of the brim of this size 7 ¼ hat in black marker. He added the inscription “Game Used Rookie Year 1987” and his number, “53”. Additionally, “53” has been written in black marker a second time on the underside of the brim.
The glove is a tan Franklin “The Backhander” model first baseman’s glove. “Game Used 1987” has been written on the pinky finger slot. Destrade signed his name below the inscription, writing his number, “53”, as well. A Franklin logo tag is sewn on the wrist area, and a circular Franklin logo is sewn near the thumb. “The Backhander” is printed on the thumb slot. These items come with a LOA from Destrade himself.
