Ty Cobb’s 24-year career spent mostly patrolling Detroit’s centerfield boasts of numerous Hall of Fame-worthy accomplishments. He led the AL 12 out of 13 seasons in batting average, ending with an MLB-best-ever .366 career average. He led in stolen bases six times, runs five times, hits eight times, and RBI four times. In 1911, he was voted MVP.
Half a century later, Cobb still had to pay his bills. Case in point, Cobb endorsed this 3- x 8- inch, green-toned First National Bank of Nevada check in the amount of $23.97 to Pacific Telephone and Telegraph on August 24, 1957. Cobb signed “Tyrus R. Cobb” in blue ballpoint pen ink (Grade 7 - 8).
“Tyrus R. Cobb” is printed vertically along the left edge. The check is perforated with “PAID” and various bank routing numbers. Cobb’s signature is unaffected. Three processing identification shields from various banks have been stamped on the back, with a bleed-through of ink across the top of the “T” in signature.
The check is encapsulated in acrylic and certified authentic by PSA/DNA.
