The AFC was dominated by the Miami Dolphins in the early 1970s, highlighted by the team’s famed perfect 1972 season that ended with a Super Bowl title. Sandwiched around that remarkable campaign were a pair of AFC championships for Miami, the franchise’s first coming in 1971. This rare, 14 karat gold cased Bulova watch belonged to wide receiver Howard Tilley, one of only a couple Dolphins players to favor the wrist piece over a ring. The working watch features a gold border around a glass face with four diamond stones at the 1, 5, 7 and 11 o'clock positions. “AFC CHAMPIONS 1971” appears centered across the face of the watch, with “ACCUTRON,” the Bulova model, above. A Miami Dolphins logo appears offset of the 8’o clock position on the watch. The watch features a functioning turn knob and weathered leather band. The reverse side is engraved “HOWARD TILLEY” in the center, with “BULOVA” at the top and “14KT GOLD CASE” at the bottom. Serial number “J372739” also is engraved on the back. It is clear Tilley admired this watch by its obvious signs of daily use. The rare piece of jewelry is an intriguing piece of football history. The item comes with a signed LOA by Howard Twilley.
