After playing second fiddle to the powerful New York Yankees in 1927 and 1928, the Philadelphia Athletics broke through in 1929, winning the American League by an astounding 18 games over the now second place Bronx Bombers. This World Series program from Shibe Park features the caricature mascots on the cover with oval portraits of the two skippers – Hall of Famers Connie Mack and Joe McCarthy, who was managing his first of his nine World Series teams. The expansive program is unscored and features full length photos of the home team players, with portraits of the visiting Cubbies. Grading excellent overall condition, the program exhibits some very light stains on the front cover, with a few edge creases and wrinkles. The spine is fully intact, but does display a light tear of the bottom couple inches and some light looseness. Players involved include Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons and Mickey Cochrane for the A’s, while the Cubs boasted HOFers Rogers Hornsby, Hack Wilson and Kiki Cuyler in its lineup. The Athletics prevailed in five games, winning their first title in over 20 years, and first of back to back championships. Excellent condition.
