The early game of baseball was very popular in most of the north east, but no place was it more popular than in upstate New York, where the game was “invented”. Research indicates all the major cities and smaller townships in the late 1800s fielded their own teams. This approximately 4-1/4 x 5-7/8 inch irregularly cut photograph is of the Syracuse baseball team. Posed in the standard format of the time, with players in their brightest whites, and an assortment of baseball equipment scattered and placed in the fore front. While a catcher’s mask and a few bats are visible, and almost every player has their cap nearby, there is not one glove seen. The youngster in the lower right corner is holding a ball, indicating he might be the pitcher or “Ace” of the team. The photo is irregularly cut, and has some light staining on the verso. However, the image is clear and focused. Encapsulated as AUTHENTIC by Beckett Grading Services (BGS).
