When Ulysses S. Grant was President he appointed James N. Tyner on July 12, 1876 to be his fourth Postmaster General. On March 9, 1877, five days after Grant left office, he penned this letter from “Washington, D.C. March 9, 1977” to “JN Tyner Postmaster Gen.” writing “Dear Sir: In parting company as officials permit me to express my appreciation of your public service during the time we have been together, and to express the hope the unbroken friendship between us during our remaining life may continue as it now exists. Hoping for you and yours health, prosperity & happiness, I am Faithfully Yours U.S. Grant.” The two page letter measures approximately 5 x 8 inches, and would present a tremendous opportunity to professionally matte and frame to highlight this historic handwritten letter. Usual folds which do not affect the signature or any of the content. A gracious letter from Grant to his friend, illustrating the charming character which helped maintaining his popularity from former War hero to former Commander in Chief.
