The Goudey Gum Company was the first company to sell baseball cards with bubble gum. To help sell their product, they offered numerous premiums in exchange for wrappers. In 1936, Goudey offered a point of purchase premium with each purchase. These premiums were black and white photos which had been colorized with soft pastel colors. A possible 50 different cards were available which included 25 individual player portraits, 11 in action photos and 14 cards with more than one player.

Offered is the Joe DiMaggio example from this set, issued during his inaugural season with the New York Yankees making this his Rookie Card. In fact, the card is so early in DiMaggio’s career, the manufacturer didn’t even know how to spell his name. The card has his name spelled incorrectly on the front as DiMagio – with only one g. This example is well centered, with bold pastel color and a crisp image – which is often blurry. However, there is a small chip on the lower edge, and the reverse has severe back damage as it was likely once removed from a scrapbook. Graded by SGC 10 POOR 1.
