The Jun 11, 1982 heavyweight title fight between the Champion Larry Holmes and his white challenger Gerry Cooney was one of the most racially charged fights in boxing history. As there had not been a white heavyweight champion since 1960, people took immediate sides, most based upon the color of their skin. With the fight located in the Caesars Palace parking lot, and tensions high, police snipers were located on surrounding buildings, while Holmes ended Cooney’s title quest with a 13th round knockout. These five 21.5 x 28.5 inch original fight posters, and a single 3.5 x 7.5 inch ticket to this fight have each been signed boldly in black Sharpie “Larry Holmes” and “Gerry Cooney.” While the Great White Hope did not win this fight, you could be the winner of this signed lot from this fantastic Heavyweight title fight. Each poster is also signed by artist LeRoy Neiman Each comes with a COA from JSA.
