To honor those troops serving and fighting overseas in the first Gulf War, Topps created a “Desert Shield” set to be distributed to the soldiers serving in Saudi Arabia, but many of the cards never made the trip overseas due to their being scooped up by military personnel stateside. As there were approximately only 6500 sets produced, complete sets are tough to attain as the cards were only distributed in wax packs. The cards are differentiated from the regular 1991 Topps set by a gold-foil stamp somewhere in the player area of each card. Includes the rookie card of Chipper Jones, plus popular cards of Hall of Famers Cal Ripken, Nolan Ryan, Greg Maddux, plus Ken Griffey, Jr. and Barry Bonds. This is a very difficult set to complete, with this example grading in solid NM to NM/MT or better condition (with a few grading lesser).
