Not only was Johnny Sain a pretty darned good pitcher in his day (“Spahn and Sain and Pray for Rain!”) but was one of the first and best pitching coaches in the major leagues. Many people know it was Sain who first pitched to Jackie Robinson on April 15, 1947, but also was the last pitcher to face Babe Ruth in an organized game during a War benefit game in 1943. This white zippered jersey has the standard red White Sox pinstripes of the day on a knit jersey, the first season the pale hose wore knit jerseys. The name “SOX” appears on the left breast, with the number “33” on the other side and back. All are in red on white tackle twill. The left shoulder features the Sox logo with the collar containing a white strip tag with “Sain” stitched in black thread. The lower front tail has the “Wilson 44” manufacturers wash tag, with a strip tag below with “72 Set 1” also stitched in black thread. Tremendous evidence of use throughout. The 1972 White Sox pitching staff was led by 20 game winners Wilbur Wood and Stan Bahnsen, and “closer” Terry Forster, who registered 29 saves. LOA from Dave Miedema, noted sports jersey expert.
