He re-invented the running back position, combining speed with immense strength and durability, a sharp contrast to the little scat backs of the early 1970s. Earl Campbell was a success since he first stepped on a NFL football field, rushing 15 times for 137 yards, en route to his first rushing title – in his rookie season! In fact, the three-time First Team All Pro won rushing titles his first three seasons in the NFL. This powder blue jersey was worn by Campbell during the early part of the 1980s, when The Earl was running wild over opposing defenses. Although the nameplate was removed, the jersey has been dated to the early 80s via known facts such as Medalist being the Oilers supplier of V-neck jerseys from 1980-1984 (similar to this shirt), along with the similar font of the numerals. There is evidence of great game use with cut sleeves and team repairs. In addition, the size tag was removed, but has been sized to a “44”, which is smaller than the 46-52 size examples which have entered the market previously. Despite the lack of nameplate and size tag, all manufacturing factors lead this jersey to be an Earl Campbell gamer from the early 1980s, based upon numbers and Campbell style characteristics.
