While becoming a member of the 500 Home Run Club may have lost some if its luster in recent years, (with the inclusion of many known or suspected steroid users the once very exclusive fraternity has ballooned to 29 members) when Philadelphia Phillies slugger Mike Schmidt hit his 537th home run to pass Mickey Mantle, he moved into 7th place on the all-time list and his career total of 548 still ranks 15th. Schmidt hit this Rawlings A. Bartlett Giamatti Official National League Ball off Houston Astros hurler Mike Scott at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia on July 14, 1988. It appears Schmidt hit this slightly stained, off-white ball on the left side of the official labeling where the ink may have been smudged by contact with the bat. Ball has “537” written in blue felt tip marker on its side panel and comes with a notarized letter of authenticity from Mike Schmidt.
