Arguably the most versatile member of "The Rat Pack", Sammy Davis, Jr was a singer, musician, actor, comedian, dancer - and Civil Rights worker. In between making movies and trading barbs with pal Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr blazed a trail on the small screen. He became one of the first African-Americans to appear regularly on television, not as a stereotype or caricature, but as himself and on equal par with any of the era's contemporary white stars. This document dates from the height of Sammy Davis Jr's fame and lists the performer’s requirements for a 1969 television appearance. An interesting part of the rider includes a provision stating that the performer does not appear in a venue that is segregated and modestly asks for a chauffeured 1969 or 1970 Cadillac. Compared to the riders of today's stars, Sammy Davis, Jr's seems almost quaint! The first contract is dated 1968 and is for an appearance on "The Joey Bishop Show". The two page double-sided contract is signed on the front page in blue ball point. The contract has been folded horizontally but does not affect Davis' signature. The second contract is a four page stapled 1970 dated rider. Davis has signed the first page in blue ball point. The document is folded horizontally but does not affect the signature. Both items are Pre-Certified by PSA/DNA.
