It was Martin Bregman who first approached Peter Maas about turning his biography of crusading NYPD officer Frank Serpico into a movie. Bregman recognized instantly that the explosive lead role would be the perfect vehicle for his friend and client Al Pacino. Of course he was right - 1973's "Serpico" propelled Pacino past his early recognition for "The Godfather" and into the upper tier of serious Hollywood stars. Besides being awarded the Golden Globe for best actor, Pacino received a Tiahuanaco Award from the Comentarios Cinematograficos in Lima, Peru. The 10" tall award can best be described as the "Peruvian Oscar" and features a carved wooden ancient Peruvian tiki character. An engraved brass plaque on the front base reads "A Al Pacino Mejor Actor 1973 Otorgado por "Comentarios Cinematograficos" Lima". Al Pacino never forgot Bregman's part in arranging the "Serpico" role and as a token of appreciation the actor gave his friend this award he won for the role that defined his career. Letter of Authenticity from Martin Bregman.
