Were the story of Morris “Moe” Berg to be told today, it might be considered something of a Hollywood screenplay. The journeyman catcher played 16 years in the Majors, and the stats speak to a solid, if unspectacular playing career. Berg, however, was known as a brilliant man, fluent in several languages, which served him well in his capacity as a spy with the OSS (the predecessor of today’s CIA). This edition of the Princeton University yearbook, the Bric-a-Brac, dates to his graduation year of 1924. It lists Berg and his Newark address among the seniors and depicts him as part of the baseball team (with team photo on p. 170 and Berg, incidentally, listed on the roster as a shortstop). The black hardcover tome is over 500 pages and measures 7.5x9.5”. There is some separation from the binding and a few pages are loose at the beginning but the book is in very good condition considering the vintage. An interesting look at the early days of one of baseball’s most intriguing figures.
