Al Pacino’s film “Dog Day Afternoon” won critical acclaim upon its release in 1975, and took home many award nominations as a result. While producers Martin Bregman and Martin Elfand did not win the “Best Picture” award, the film did earn an Oscar in the “Original Screenplay” category. Bregman and Elfand were recognized in Italy as well, winning the prestigious David di Donatello (translated, refers to Donatello’s sculpture, “David”) in 1976. The award is presented by the Academy of Italian Cinema, and this was a special citation presented to the producers. Unlike the typical statuette, this award depicts a copy of the famous statue mounted on a weighty, almost pyramid-shaped malachite stone, with plate below detailing the nature of the award with the recipient’s name. It stands approximately 6” high and is 5”across at the base, a perfect conversation piece or memento for fans of the genre.
