1979 marked the only time National League MVP balloting led to a tie: both Willie Stargell and Keith Hernandez given awards. The Kansas City Sports Writers Awards had no such quandary when the decided their NL MVP: Keith Hernandez. The veteran first baseman led the league in average (.344), doubles (48), runs (116), and just missed first in hits and on base percentage. He was also handed his second consecutive Golden Glove Award. This is Hernandez' award for that career season. The impressive trophy is 18" tall with a silver cup featuring the Kansas City Royals emblem with a ball player on top, mounted on a 10 1/4" square wood base. Four patriotic eagles are perched on each corner of the base guarding the engraved plaques reading "KEITH HERNANDEZ" and 1979 NATIONAL LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE YEAR NINTH ANNUAL KANSAS CITY BASEBALL AWARDS DINNER January 26, 1980". The trophy shows some tarnishing and pitting with age and the wood base beneath the cup has come loose, none of which diminishes the impressiveness of this award. LOA from Keith Hernandez.
