Connie Mack, who just a mere 10 years before was the leader of the finest team in the American League, now skippered a club that was destined to finish a whopping 29 games out of first. Sometime during that 1922 season Mack led the team onto the field at League Park in Cleveland where a photographer captured his boys in this stunning 10" x 27" sepia tone print. All 26 members, decked out in their road uniforms with the famous blue Philadelphia Athletics elephant emblazoned on their chest, stare back at us from that moment 92 years ago. A few of the players depicted, Eddie Rommel, Jimmy Dykes and Bing Miller, formed the nucleus of Mack's 1929-31 juggernaut that many consider the best team of all-time. Another notable depicted is Joe Hauser, "The Babe Ruth of the Minor Leagues" and the first man to hit more than 60 home runs in two separate minor league seasons. The back of the photo has the numbers 167269, 1106 and 503 written on it. The photograph shows some aging and wear, none of which distracts from the image and in fact actually enhances its visual appeal. The photo has been put into a frame which has come loose with age but the glass is intact. The previous owner has hand written various facts and stats about this team on a piece of paper which has been affixed to the reverse. A great image that at just a casual glance evokes a wave of nostalgic feelings.
