Tragedy struck the New York Yankees and the baseball world when catcher Thurman Munson died in a plane crash in the Cessna that he was piloting on August 2, 1979. Famed artist Leroy Neiman painted this 39x26 artwork depicting the Yankees captain in his catcher’s gear. A caption that reads “In loving memory of our Friend, Teammate, and Captain Thurman Munson June 7, 1947 to August 2, 1979” is at the base of the piece and is signed by 14 of his Yankees’ teammates. Notable signatures include Hall of Famers Reggie Jackson (inscribed “44”) and Goose Gossage, Bobby Murcer, Roy White, Sparky Lyle, Graig Nettles, Willie Randolph and Bucky Dent. Other signatures include Mickey Rivers, Lou Piniella and Ron Guidry. This item comes with a full LOA from JSA (U09852).
