Son of Eliphalet Remington II (1793-1861), Samuel Remington (1819-1892) was one of two sons in the E. Remington and Sons family business that produced firearms (rifles) and typewriters, in Upstate New York’s Mowhawk Valley setting up their forge and foundry by the banks of the Mowhawk River and the Erie Canal just after its completion in 1828. Business boomed with the onset of the Civil War and the company also began manufacturing the first commercial typewriter in 1873. This set of three decorative checks from the Cashier of Ilion Bank each contains a lithograph etching of a blacksmith at work on its far left. The checks are written and signed in black fountain pen ink with the earliest numbered “33” being dated July 30, 1853 and made out to “Sam Hatch” in the amount of “Twenty Five” dollars and artfully signed “E. Remington and Sons.” The second unnumbered check is dated April 8th, 1854 and made out to “Daniel Braning” in the amount of “ten” dollars and signed by “S [Samuel] Remington per Perry Philleo Agt.” The third check numbered “134” is dated May 2nd or 3rd 1855 [?] the ink is a bit smudged, and made out to “Malou Braning” in the amount of “Fifteen” dollars and signed by “S. Remington.” All three 7” x 2.5” checks are dyed varying shades of blue and each is cut-cancelled with a small tear in the middle. Lot of thee has been PSA/DNA pre-certified. LOA from University Archives signed by leading historical autograph expert John Reznikoff.
