Before he went on to win four World Series titles at the helm of the New York Yankees, Joe Torre served during six seasons as skipper of the St. Louis Cardinals. He was hired by the Redbirds in 1990, replacing Whitey Herzog, but uniform number seniority was not in his favor. Despite having worn his trademark #9 while a player with the squad for six seasons, that number was unavailable upon his return, belonging to veteran Terry Pendleton. Torre managed the last 58 games of the season wearing #22, the only time in his career that we’ve been able to find him in that number; this uniform was worn by Torre during that season. The grey pullover v-neck garment features “Cardinals” across the chest in red-yellow-navy-and-black with number on the left chest and back in red-on-navy tackle twill. The collar and sleeve openings are red, white and blue stripes, and a Rawlings label size 46 with laundry instructions appears inside the left front tail with a white flap tag reading “Set 2 1990.” The gray zip-and-snap knit pants bear the same stripe accents along the waistband and down the side of each leg. A Rawlings label size 36 with laundry instructions appears on the inner back of the waistband with a white swatch to its left reading “Torre 36 26 90 2” in black stitching. Attached to that is a white flap tag with “Set 2 1990.” On the inner front left of the waistband is stamped a size designator (36). A unique piece from the Hall of Famer. LOA from noted jersey expert Dave Miedema.
