Lyndon Johnson is the first person in the 20th Century to serve not only as President but Vice President, Congressman and Senator. This type written 1958 letter dates from his stint as House Democratic Leader, upon whose letterhead this note has been composed. Normally remembered for his brusqueness, this letter is most tender in nature, thanking a Mr. Jake Avis for his kind remembrances of his father. As a foreshadowing of his future Johnson writes "Being human, I cannot help being pleased that you should feel I possess some of the qualifications for the highest office in our Nation. But I am not a candidate for the Presidency. As I have said before, I will not be a candidate." Of course within five years Lyndon Johnson would indeed hold the highest office in the land. Johnson has signed the letting in bold black ink. Letter has two horizontal folds and two tape residue marks on the top and bottom. A slim inch long piece in the lower right corner has been removed and there are several insignificant light creases throughout. A nice piece showing the seldom-seen tender side of a tough man. Letter of Authenticity from JSA.
