While the subject matter alone was enough to tug at the nation’s heartstrings, many capable people worked to chronicle the brief life of Lou Gehrig in the 1942 film, “The Pride of the Yankees.” While the film itself was nominated for 11 Oscar Awards by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, only Daniel Mandell took home the coveted statuette, in the category of Film Editing. This certificate was presented by the Academy to Mandell on December 31, 1942, in recognition of his nomination for the award. The certificate itself is in outstanding condition with very slight creasing at the top, and includes the AMPAS’ raised seal. Also included in this lot is the envelope in which the certificate was sent to Mandell, complete with Los Angeles postmark and the editor’s North Hollywood address. There is some natural aging and yellowing around the edges but the envelope also stands up quite well.
