English born actor married to President John F. Kennedy’s sister Patricia Helen Kennedy, Peter Lawford was also a charter member of Hollywood’s Rat Pack nicknamed “Brother in Lawford,” by “Old Blue Eyes” himself, Frank Sinatra. Lawford wore this full-length (52-inch) Samuel Rifkin Furs of Glendale, California, raccoon coat as “Jonathan Harrow III” in Irving Berlin’s 1948 musical Easter Parade starring Judy Garland and Fred Astaire. Featuring popular songs like, “Easter Parade”, “Steppin’ Out with My Baby” and “We’re a Couple of Swells,” the film was the most financially successful movie for both Garland and Astaire and the highest grossing musical of the year. Lawford wore this coat in the scene where his Jonathan Harrow III character finds Judy Garland at the theater in the movie. Plush, full-length coat has tan shaved-beaver lining with four large leather buttons on both sides and a chain-link metal hanging wire in the collar. Pockets are trimmed in striped raccoon tail and the sleeve ends have five-inch cuffs. Two “Samuel Rifkin Furs, Glendale, California” labels are sewn onto both sides of the lining and the fur grain pattern is consistent with photos of Lawford wearing the coat in the film. Signed LOA from Debbie Reynolds.
