With Yankee Stadium a thing of the past, only Fenway Park remains as a monument to baseballs storied past. Of the two, Fenway is the elder, opened in 1912 and home to everyone from Smokey Joe Wood and a young Babe Ruth to Ted William, Carl Yastrzemski and Roger Clemens. This 1933 document securing the engineering and architectural design services of the Osborn Engineering Company put in motion the origin of one of Fenway’s most beloved features. The single page agreement is dated August 21, 1933 and signed in black fountain pen on behalf of the “Boston American League Baseball Company,” by Thomas A. Yawkey, Hall of Famer and long-time owner of the Boston Red Sox and by the President of The Osborn Engineering Company. During this time, Fenway was undergoing a major renovation that included Grandstand seating improvements. Of historical note, a major fire during construction in January 1934 destroyed much of Fenway Park, but with much effort construction was completed as required by contract in time for the April 1934 home season opening game. Also in 1934 the famous Fenway Park scoreboard was added with what was then considered high-tech lights representing balls and strikes. The score is still updated by hand today from behind the famous Green Monster outfield wall. An historic document that put in motion one of baseball’s most beloved stadium features! Letter of Authenticity from JSA.
