This is an incredibly rare original 1903 3.5 X 5 oval mounted photograph of New York Highlanders baseball catcher Jack Zalusky taken by preeminent baseball photographer Carl Horner. Horner famously used such a photograph to produce fabulous over-size team composite photographs of major league teams of this era. 1903 was the historic season from the inception of the New York Yankees when they were originally named the “Highlanders” in recognition of their ballpark called “Hilltop Park” that was hastily built on a site that was one of the highest points in Manhattan. Ten years later the team moved to share the Polo Grounds with the New York Giants and were officially renamed the “Yankees” to begin their ascent towards becoming the greatest dynasty in sports history. Original Carl Horner baseball photographs are among the scarcest and most valued of all vintage baseball photography. Perhaps none are as scarce as this photograph of Zalusky taken during the very first season of the “Yankees” and also considering the fact that he played only seven games with the Highlanders in his single season playing major league baseball. The photograph is handsomely framed 10 X 11.5.
