While working in NYC during the 1960’s Warhol created some of his most enduring designs and artwork including the Campbell Soup Can, Brillo Pad Box and celebrity art of Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor. Not just limiting himself to canvas Warhol lent his artistic genius to music and film and by the time the 80’s rolled around just the mere image of Andy Warhol was regarded as art. This amazing artifact is the original life and accident Lloyd’s of London insurance policy issued to iconic pop artist by this renowned insurer of the rich & famous. Warhol certainly had cause to insure himself as he was once shot and seriously wounded by an attack that he barely survived on June 3, 1968 in his New York studio.

The two-sided oversize 10 ½” x 16 ½” document bears the embossed Seal of Lloyd’s and lists the rather unique and detailed schedule of benefits, paraphrased to include: death ($500,000), Total Loss of two limbs or two eyes; or one limb and one eye ($500,000), and Total loss of one limb or one eye ($250,000). This amount would be sure to amuse Warhol today as one of his paintings recently changed owners for no less than 70 million dollars! Additional language identifies the exclusion of injuries sustained while “the Assured is in a state of insanity”. The policy is dated from London on April 7, 1983 and extends the period of continued insurance until November 8, 1983. Warhol’s occupation is listed as Artist and his NYC East Side address listed as well. Comes with Gotta Have It LOA.
