A secession from the Union by southern states had already begun before Abraham Lincoln took office as the 16th President of the United States. The Civil War commenced the following month in April, 1861 when Confederate forces fired on Fort Sumter. Lincoln immediately called for each state to provide troops to retake the fort, and this rare artifact is a period broadside for volunteers to serve the Union Army a little more than a year after the Civil War began. Measuring 11” x 15”, this Civil War paper broadside from 1862 proclaims, “GRAND RALLY!! OUR COUNTRY CALLS! The citizens of Bridgewater, East Bridgewater and West Bridgewater are invited to attend a Mass Meeting to be held in AGRICULTURAL HALL, BRIDGEWATER, on Wednesday Evening, Aug. 27, at 7 o’clock, to take measures to raise immediately from these towns a Company of Volunteers in anticipation of the Draft to be made upon them for their quota of 300,000 men called for by the President to serve nine months. HON. THOMAS RUSSELL, N.B. BRYANT, ESQ., of Boston, and other distinguished speakers are expected to address the meeting.” Displayed in a period frame measuring 19” x 22”. Comes with Gotta Have It LOA.
