This circa 1890 catcher's mask is a rare style often referred to as a spider" mask. The mask features an ornate cage held together with hooks and wires including an extended area of the cage meant to protect the chin and throat. The first catcher's mask was invented in 1876 by Fred Thayer, the Captain of the Harvard University baseball club who adapted a fencing mask for the purpose. Use of this invention quickly spread among amateurs and professionals alike. Besides offering obvious protection, the catcher's mask also improved fielding as catchers developed greater confidence behind the plate which became increasingly necessary as pitchers were beginning to throw new pitches such as the "curve" ball for the first time. Comes with a Gotta Have It certificate that unconditionally guarantees the authenticity of this item."
