For better or worse, mostly worse, the New York Mets called Shea Stadium home for 44 years from 1964-2008. An odd and quirky ballpark named for an attorney who helped bring National League baseball back to New York after the Giants and Dodgers abandoned their faithful, the big Shea is best remembered for its Amazing-Ya Gotta Believe-Miracle teams that came few and far between the decades of lovable losing Mets fans so readily identified with. The 2008 Mets team was the composite of its predecessors falling out of post season contention on the last day of the season in the last game ever played at Shea. This Schutt Hollywood bases, base was employed as first base, when the Mets were still in the thick of the pennant race during a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates on August 11, 2008. Carlos Delgado played first for the Mets that day while Doug Mientkiewicz manned the bag for the Bucs in the Pirates 7-5 victory. The Mets official “Shea Stadium 1964-2008” farewell logo, including a silhouette of the stadium and its signature blue and orange corrugated steel squares, is painted on the top of the base which reveals plenty of game use with a heavy coating of infield dirt covering most of the bag. Alternating blue and orange MLB “I Live for This” and Mets logo nameplates are inlaid along all four exterior sides of the base which has MLB Authentication hologram #LH030496 adhered on the underside corner.
