The 1936-39 New York Yankees are often given the title of the greatest baseball team of all-time. By the time the team gathered to sign this baseball in 1938, the Yanks were in the midst of a stunning four consecutive World Championships. The 1938 team was the perfect example of McCarthy's well-oiled machine - veterans Lou Gehrig, Lefty Gomez and Bill Dickey combined with youngsters Joe DiMaggio and Tommy Henrich to sweep the Chicago Cubs in that fall's World Series. Although manager Joe McCarthy's autograph is a club house signature, four Hall of Famers have signed the ball: Lou Gehrig 3-4/10), Joe DiMaggio (3/10), Bill Dickey (4/10) and Lefty Gomez (4/10). All signatures are in black fountain pen. This Reach Harridge Official American League ball shows evidence of a coat of shellac and has taken on a warm patina with age. The other Yanks who signed this ball are Red Ruffing (clubhouse), Red Rolfe (clubhouse), Art Jorgens, Wes Ferrell, George Selkirk, Ivy Andrews, Joe Gordon (signed twice, both clubhouse), Bump Hadley (signed twice), Tommy Henrich, Myril Hoag, Frank Crosetti, Johnny Murphy, Babe Dahlgren, Jake Powell, batting practice pitcher Paul Schreiber plus coaches Johnny Schulte and Art Fletcher (clubhouse). Letter of Authenticity from PSA/DNA.
