1974 was all Steve Garvey. The Dodgers' first baseman started the season like gang-busters, hitting everything in sight and fielding his position with machine-like perfection. Still, Garvey's name was left off the ballots for the '74 All-Star Game. In tribute to his universal appeal and talent, the fans took it upon themselves to pencil in his name, making Garvey one of only two players in the history of the mid-summer classic to make the team as a write-in. It would be his first of 10 All-Star appearances. Garvey then went on to completely dominate the National League, hitting for a .312 average with 21 home runs and a staggering 200 hits and the Golden Glove Award for his fielding. The Baseball Writers Association of America voted Steve Garvey 1974's MVP, baseball's highest single season award. This is the trophy the LA Sports writers presented to Garvey. Consisting of a silver vase perched atop a wood base it stands 11 1/2" tall with a dimensional BBWAA emblem and engraved "STEVE GARVEY LOS ANGELES DODGERS MOST VALUABLE PLAYER 1974". The award shows some tarnishing with age and the expected wear along the base and displays beautifully.
