The Gold Glove Award is the ultimate acknowledgement of a ballplayer's fielding ability and in 1978 Davey Lopes was the judged the best second baseman in the National league. Lopes' flawless fielding combined with his .278 bat and 45 stolen bases helped lead the Dodgers to their second consecutive pennant. This is the 1978 Rawlings Gold Glove Award “Presented to Davey Lopes honoring his selection to the Sporting News National League All-Star Fielding Team.” This glimmering and iconic 17” x 16” trophy displays a gold-painted Rawlings Major League All-Star Fielding Team glove mounted on a solid Oak platform featuring a portrait of Lopes etched into a metallic gold colored plate with a pair of gold painted Rawlings baseballs supported by tripods of miniature golden bats on either side above the nameplate adorned with the familiar red Rawlings logo under each ball. There is some glue residue visible on the front of the base where the plaque has been displaced with age and the baseballs show some dents from resting in their holder. Vintage Golden Glove Awards rarely make it into the hobby and this is all the more desirable as it is from the second baseman of the 1978 NL Champs.
