To this day only 37 men have stolen more than 500 bases and Davey Lopes reached that magic number on June 5, 1985. Lopes swiped his 500th career stolen base in front of his home town crowd at Wrigley. To commemorate this career milestone the base was removed from the game and bronzed. The base was mounted on a wooden base and a brass plaque engraved with "DAVEY LOPES 500th CAREER STOLEN BASE JUNE 5, 1985 CUBS vs BRAVES". Lopes went on to steal 57 more bases before he retired in 1987.
