This program from the 1942 World Series played between the St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Yankees features an image of the American Flag blowing calmly in the wind with two red pennants below it hanging from the same pole advertising the series match-up. Inside this program are player bio’s and black & white player photographs from each team. The St. Louis Cardinals made good on their franchise win record of 106 games and defeated the defending champions 4 games to 1. Interestingly, inside the front cover of the program, is an advertisement from the Alpen Brau Beer Company with a red cardinal mocking an image of Adolf Hitler with the headline, “Your lead isn’t big enough either.” This series was played during the height of World War II and many Americans looked to sports then as they do now as a way to take a small break from the horrors of war and enjoy a game that they loved.
